Long ago, at the three-way crossroads of Cheonan, there lived a widowed father, Yu Bong-seo, and his young daughter, Neungso. When the father set out for the distant frontier, he pushed a single willow branch into the ground in front of the inn. Then, leaving behind the words, "When this tree grows and blooms, I'll come back for you," he went away alone. Neungso grew up in that very spot. But her father never came back. Neungso did not leave the crossroads; she planted more and more willows along the roadside and guarded the place all by herself. One early winter, a scholar named Park Hyeon-su, on his way to take the state exam, was attacked by bandits and stumbled in covered in blood. Neungso tended to him with all her heart, and the two of them came to share their feelings. Park Hyeon-su left for Hanyang, promising that he would pass the exam and return without fail. Once again Neungso was left alone, and she began to wait. Today, Neungso wants to bring out, one by one, the feelings she kept buried in her heart through all those long years, and show them to you, the traveler.
